Weight access is not the same as usage rights
A model can publish downloadable weights while still placing important conditions on commercial use, modification, redistribution or downstream derivatives.
Open-weight describes access to trained model parameters. The license defines what you are permitted to do with them.
Before using any open-weight model, inspect the authoritative license and release documentation. Do not assume that "downloadable", "open", "community" or "research" all mean the same thing.
Also check whether code, tokenizer, datasets, adapters or other repository components use separate licenses.

Common licensing patterns
These are categories and examples, not verdicts about any specific model repository. Always read the exact text attached to the model you intend to use.
Conceptual comparison
Permissions vary by exact license. This table is a reading guide, not a substitute for the authoritative legal text.
| License pattern | Commercial use | Modification | Redistribution | Typical caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Permissive standard license | Often permitted | Often permitted | Often permitted | Notices, attribution and patent clauses may apply. |
| Custom community license | Depends | Depends | Depends | May include scale thresholds, use restrictions or downstream conditions. |
| Research-only release | Often restricted | May be allowed | May be limited | Commercial deployment can be prohibited. |
| API-only model | Per service terms | Weights unavailable | Weights unavailable | Terms govern service access rather than weight redistribution. |
